Tongyeong, a city of Murals, Honey bread, Yacht Rides and Shell Art
We initially planned to visit the Tongyeong Cable Car but due to inclement weather, we decided to do some indoor activity instead, so we went to this place...
Tongyeong Traditional Craft Museum 통영전통공예관
This museum has an exhibit of various Korean Traditional Art products
Najeonchilgi Experience 나전칠기체험
‘Najeon' 나전 means mother-of-pearl and `Chilgi' 칠기 refers to lacquerware.
‘Najeonchilgi' 나전칠기 is the art of inlaying mother-of-pearl in lacquerware.
Inlay products are made in a variety of intricate and highly detailed patterns and designs using the shells of abalone, clam, and turban shell. Products decorated with this art are considered luxurious, symbolizing wealth and nobility.
The seawater in Tongyeong are believed to be special because it is where the hot and cold water of the seas meet, making the shellfish more delicious and their shells shinier. These circumstances made the traditional artform of using shells flourish in Tongyeong.
In particular, the Tongyeong inlaid lacquer has the best values nationwide with its splendid colors and mystic patterns of 400 years of history.
You can have hands-on experience of this traditional art in this exhibit hall where you can inlay shells with lacquer on a hand mirror.
By doing this activity, you will appreciate how sheer creativity can transform these shiny shells into magnificent artworks and realize that artisans will dedicate up to months of labor just to produce quality masterpieces.

Recommended Restaurant:
Samgyetang 삼계탕 (Ginseng Chicken Soup) in Kangbok Samgyetang in Tongyeong 통영
This soup dish consists of a whole young chicken filled with garlic, jujube ginseng and rice.
This traditional Koreandish is packed with nutrients, it rejuvenates your body and boosts your metabolism.
This dish is especially popular to eat during the hottest days of summer called sambok 삼복. The chicken is cooked for a long time making the meat very soft you can even eat the bones.
This dish is best accompanied with a small complimentary bottle of ginseng wine called insamju 인삼주. We got a chance to try this dish at a famous restaurant in located just near the Tongyeong Cable Car.

After that we went to...
Dongpirang Mural Village 동피랑 벽화마을 in Tongyeong
Dongpirang Mural Village is huge photozone!
Everywhere you look, the walls and houses are painted with anything you can think of, all such wonderful art!
This place is beautiful not only because of the colors, but also because of the amazing success story behind it.
This village was once a target of being destroyed for redevelopment. But thanks to the campaign 'Paint the Streets of Dongpirang With Colors and Sketches', university art majors helped decorate the walls, fences, stairs, everything. That is how the once sleepy village turned into a tourist hotspot.
Everytime you visit, you will see a different village because as the paintings fade away, students would continuously replace them with new art!
What's very charming about this place is that the murals are made by different individuals. You can really see each person's creativity come alive in each mural.
And although each has their own charm, collectively, they produce such a nice visual appeal on how each one melded together and completes the whole place.
The village is huge and you might need a whole day if you want to see all the artworks.
Plus when you reach the top, you get a nice view of Tongyeong city including the charming Gangguan port.
Definitely worth a visit!

Must-try Tip:
Kkul Ppang (Honey Bread) 꿀빵
This sticky sweet bread is a local specialty of Tongyeong which started since 1963. This type of bread was invented with the intention of making a snack for fishermen and shipbuilders which could be kept for a long time despite the warm climate in Tongyeong.
Originally the bread has a redbean paste filling inside, but now there are other varieties that have different fillings such as sweet potato, chestnut, yuja and even green tea!
There are many stores selling this bread all over Tongyeong, especially in the market area, so don't forget to try this bread when you a visit Tongyeong!
Price:
1000원 per piece

Lastly we had dinner in this restaurant:
This restaurant specializes in Hansik 한식 set meals. One of the best seafood themed Korean traditional food that I have eaten to. They will also serve a lot of food, so you'll really end up getting stuffed here!
In this set meal, you will have raw fish, sea pinapple and octopus slices.
This unique omelette stuffed with shellfish.
They also serve this makkeolli which the owner said is the best makkeolli there is. And I couldnt disagree with that. This makkeolli is so creamy it tastes like there's milk in it.
